We believe Balance’s three-pillar approach and methodology represent a radically forward-thinking approach, moving beyond traditional offsetting models to address biodiversity loss, community resilience, and durable carbon removal as interconnected priorities rather than isolated outcomes.

I’ve been involved in these discussions with Dan since the original Earth Summit, and this is one of the most exciting initiatives I’ve seen emerge from the climate and biodiversity space. The Balance approach connects the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) agendas, supports local communities, and commits to genuine long-term stewardship.

What’s impressive is that the methodology isn’t fixed; it’s evolving and open to new ideas, built for transparency and continuous improvement. The commitment to a 100-year model aligned with the true lifecycle of CO₂, combined with a 40 percent income share for local communities and a focus on human rights, makes it both credible and essential in a world that needs long-term, nature-based solutions.
